This is an informal message. More formal invitation will follow in the next weeks.
Dear all:
We are informally starting some matching now. If you are willing to try out our beta site at
https://match.sichuanteachers.org, you might be matched with a student within the next days. We have a few hundred students information offline but their profiles are not online yet. To give you a taste of what we have, this is some information, freshly obtained by our outreach team on the front-line, with real identification information removed:
1. 初二学生,同班有10多个同学遇难,自己没有受伤,家里房屋倒塌,目前住帐篷,对老师年龄和性别无要求,希望数学和物理方面的辅导老师.家里座机电话,每周一次上课,平时都在家里 middle school student, 10 + classmates died, no self-injury, house collapsed, live in tent now, no gender preference, wants math and physics help, with phone at home, once a week lesson, usually at home.
2. 初一学生,希望辅导老师年龄大一点,男老师,辅导科目是生物和地理,目前成绩在班里前几名,英语成绩一般.家里座机电话,每周一次上课,平时都在家里 middle school student, want an older male teacher, wants help in biology and geography, one of the best students in class, average English ability, with phone at home, once a week lesson, usually at home.
3. 初二学生,地震中受伤,右大腿截肢,目前在成都假肢厂康复中心接受治疗,刚装上假肢,希望找一个年龄较小的辅导老师,辅导科目是化学.有一个成都的志愿者回国后可能去看望他 middle school student, injured, right leg amputated, ...., want a younger teacher, needs help in chemistry.....
4. 初三学生,理科比较差一些,文科成绩较好,希望辅导老师是年龄较大的女老师,辅导科目是英语和数学 middle school student, science subjects are weaker then arts subjects, wants an older female teacher, wants help in English and math.
We have some funding to provide sponsored phones to the kids if needed. Some of us will visit the affected areas as well.
You need to create a teacher profile there. We also have a reputation system there to verify the identities of teachers through mutual voting. The people the planning team know will have the initial right to vote for others. People have high votes will be promoted to have voting rights.
This informal exercise is a very small scale one (a few dozen teachers will be chosen to be matched through some means which we are still experimenting and actively discussing). We will soon send out more formal invitations when we launch our website officially very soon.
We have some initial cooperation from the local officials and schools. 10% of the kids orphaned by the Earthquake have preliminarily promised to join us. We also have some of the best people in the world in our planning team. It took us two months of hard work to fully discuss this long-term plan. We are about to fully implement it if we see success in our testing phase. If this experiment works with a hundred people, it could possibly work for 100,000 of them. This could change the landscape of how the kids in China (or more generally less developed countries) receive education. Please check our website for the various ways you could join us.
